Have you had your Fix today?

updated on 24th June 2010

Sugar makes the world go round! It's true :) Think of all the happy occasions in your life and what generally gets you out of a foul mood, and most likely, a sugary concoction comes to mind. Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, fudge, caramel, chocolate, sprinkles, cream... nothing fixes a black day like a good 'ol sugar rush. Need more reasons?

#1: A special do calls for a delightfully sweet something.

#2: A slice of cake with your coffee will make your day.
#3: You need a gift and only something sinfully sweet will do.
#4: You've been good all week and deserve a treat, dammit!
#5: Because, well, just because.

Know what's my all-time fave reason for a Fix? Life should be celebrated, so carpe diem!! Seize the day!!

What's up?

First up, thanks to all the peeps who are now fans of SugarFixSG on Facebook; you guys officially rock! Thanks for your support :)

SugarFixSG Facebook page, so scoot over and be a fan if you're not one already :) There's a button on the top of this page that conveniently takes you to there.

And now, exciting stuff! SugarFix cupcakes were featured in the papers on Tuesday 22nd June 2010! (Life! section, p8)!! NLB and Twilight Singapore held a special event to celebrate Twilight vampire Edward Cullen's birthday as well as the upcoming movie The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Check out the news clipping below:

It was an exciting opportunity to do something different, and being familiar with the source material, I was quite psyched to work with the theme and come up with something special :)

I came up with 5 different cupcake toppers that reflected Edward's character and came up with the following:

Topper 1: The Cullen family crest

Topper 2: A quote by Edward Cullen (*sigh*)

Topper 3: Volvo XC60 (as featured in the New Moon movie and the upcoming Eclipse movie). As mentioned in the books, Edward's a Volvo owner.

Topper 4: Edward's favourite food: Mountain lion

Topper 5: Piano keys 'cos Edward's an excellent pianist

Ooh, and the cupcake flavour? Vanilla cupcakes with a strawberry filling. Very vamp-like me thinks :) The cupcakes are topped with sparkly fondant, 'cos y'know, vampires in Ms. Meyer's world sparkle in the sun.

Here's the set-up at the venue. The tier decor is inspired by the cover of the Twilight book, so lots of red, red apples and black accents.

For more pictures of the event and the cupcakes, head on to SugarFixSG's Facebook fan page and to Twilight Singapore.

On to more cupcakes! I love this following one! I made these as a wedding gift for a groom who loves tools, more specifically, Snap-On brand tools. I've never heard of the brand prior to making these, but oh my! They make the most gorgeous tools I've ever seen, haha! I'm still drooling over their sleek toolboxes :)

I made a couple of gumpaste toppers, namely, a screwdriver, a hammer, a power drill, and the iconic toolbox in black and red.

Another client wanted a cupcake version of the Tiffany-inspired cake I did some time back, so I came up with these sweet babies. Perfect as an engagaement gift :)

Now this one is just too cute! Made to celebrate a birthday, the request was simple: ladybugs!!
I made the smiling ladybugs out of gumpaste, each resting on a leaf before topping off the buttercream-frosted cupcakes. Finished off with some confetti sprinkles. Very fun, very cute :)

Here's a close-up. Smile!!

Wedding time! Inspired by an earlier cupcake design I made, the client requested for a similar design for a wedding. Very bold and romantic, from the colours to the design :)

The next client wanted something simple but elegant, and in the colours lilac and black. I came up with this two tier fondant-covered cake with matching cupcakes.

Another purple cake coming up! This three-tier cake is covered in light cream fondant with purple decor. The bows on the first and third tier have brooches attached to them, while the second tier is covered in a damask design. Purple gumpaste butterflies are added as the cake topper and accents on the second tier.

While we're on the topic of butterflies, the following cake was done as a wedding gift and features wired gumpaste butterflies 'fluttering' among the yellow gumpaste roses. The cake sides feature embossed butterflies which were dusted in yellow and blue in keeping with the colour theme.

I grew up with lots of cakes in my house as my mom was, and still is, an avid baker. You'd have thought I'd be turned off by cakes by now. On the contrary, it has only piqued my curiosity and I ended up tinkering in the kitchen a whole lot more. I've learned the classic family favourites from my mom and introduced some new ones to tickle everybody's palates further. These are some of my fave cakes.

* Dark Chocolate Cake
One of the first things I set out to do was to make a killer chocolate cake, and this fits the bill nicely, thank you. Three layers of dark chocolate cake filled and frosted with luscious ganache.

How could you go wrong with that?!

* Chocolate Hazelnut Cake
I tinkered with the dark chocolate cake and came up with a nutty variation, so to speak. I first made this for my sister's birthday last year to approvals all around. Yay!! Dark chocolate cake frosted with chocolate-hazelnut buttercream and topped off with a chocolate glaze. Toasted crushed hazelnuts in the middle give the cake a nice yummy crunch.

*Fresh Orange Cake
I love anything citrus so this is a winner by my standards and definitely one of my all-time favourites. Don't let its plain-looking demeanour fool you, this cake packs a punch. A refreshing orange cake made extra moist with orange syrup spooned over it. Yummm...

* Walnut Cake
This should be my family's official cake. We pretty much have it in the house year-round. My mom has been doing this for years and I am still not sick of it. Needless to say, I learned how to make this from her. A lusciously light cake studded with chocolate flakes and topped with walnuts, sandwiched with a layer of apricot jam. Oh yeah. Perfect with tea. Or coffee. Or just by itself. Heee...

* Carrot Cake
The first time I made this cake, I was surprised how delicious it tasted, and no, it did not taste anything like rabbit food. Which is a good thing, no?

"Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie.
" - Jim Davis

Need more reason to eat this? Walnuts give this classic cake a nice crunch. And they're good for you. Topped with cream cheese frosting. Cheese, people. How can I say no to cheese?!

* Brownies

Ahh, brownies. Dense chocolatey brownies with chopped walnuts. Fudgy goodness in every bite. One of life's simplest pleasures.

And when it's topped with ganache? Oh heaven. I made a few of these for the last Aidilfitri Open House we had and they were devoured pretty fast. Luckily, I managed to gobble some before they were all gone!

I made a batch of Rocky Road Brownies - basically brownies topped with toasted marshmallows and chocolate drizzle - for a BBQ event my husband attended and there was none left by the end of the night. Hooray!!

"Life is made up of small pleasures" - Norman Lear

I like making cupcakes. I like eating them too! The best thing about them? You don't have to share! Oh and sprinkles! Who wouldn't like sprinkles on a cupcake?!

I made Happy Confetti cupcakes as I call them (basically Vanilla Cupcakes with sprinkles in them) for the kid in me. I love biting into one and seeing the riot of colours within. Paired with Vanilla Buttercream, it truly is simple and delightful. Yum-yum.

Chocolate Cupcakes with a swirl of Chocolate Buttercream never fail to put a smile on my loved ones' faces, especially my niece whom I will always enlist to help me with the sprinkles. Double chocolate whammy!!

Another great thing about cupcakes? It's so much fun to choose flavour combos for the cake and frosting. And let's not get started on the toppers! With choices like these, it's endless, delicious fun :) Go see some pretty & yummy cupcakes at the Gallery!

Good things come in boxes!

*Cake & Cupcake Giftboxes

I love making these things!! A dressed-up cupcake speaks volumes, and when you have a whole box filled with these dainty things all packed with a pretty bow? Gorgeous!! And a beautifully-decorated customised cake that comes in a decorated box is a show-stopper by itself :)

I first made a cupcake giftbox for my bestest friend when her brother got engaged. I got to use all my flower cutters and let my imagination run free, it was so fun. It's a real challenge to work within a theme and to make sure everything is tastefully done, but I love it and I get to share the excitement of the person's special day.

I've had requests for many more cupcake and cake giftboxes since, and I've enjoyed making each and every one of them. Look out for them featured in the Gallery.
